There are fears that planned important tariffs on cars entering the United States could have a ‘huge impact’ on two car factories in the South of England. Thousands of staff are employed across the Mini plant at Cowley in Oxford and the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars site at Goodwood, West Sussex, both owned by BMW Group. Some 16.9% of British car exports were to the US last year, representing a total of more than 101,000 units worth £7.6 billion.

Crawley could become part of Surrey as part of a major reorganisation of local government, council leaders have revealed. The surprise suggestion would represent a significant political change for one of the biggest towns in West Sussex. Borough councillors in Crawley announced they had been holding talks with counterparts across the county border due to the existing “strong economic links” with neighbouring parts of Surrey.

Some councils in the South and South East of England have been successful in their bids to be on the government’s fast-track devolution programme. Local elections will be postponed by a year in Essex, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire, ministers have confirmed. The affected areas are East Sussex, West Sussex, Essex, Thurrock, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and Surrey. It will pave the way for directly-elected mayors for Greater Essex, Hampshire & Solent, and Sussex & Brighton.

Students and staff from Sussex affected by strikes at some sixth form colleges travelled to Westminster, as Kit Bradshaw reportsThe government should rethink its approach to teachers' pay in order to end strikes at some sixth form colleges, according to a Liberal Democrat MP. Alison Bennett, who represents Mid Sussex, called a debate in the House of Commons on Monday night in which she accused ministers of putting young people's education at risk by exacerbating pay inequality in the sector.
