There was a moment, this past summer, when I wondered if I had made a mistake. I’d gathered a small crowd of acquaintances at a surf shop near my Oahu, Hawaii, house. They included dust-covered surfboard shapers, shop managers in bikinis and branded gear, vaguely Instagram-famous athletes, and a few somewhat more famous North Shore drifters and tinkerers.

Here’s the secret: There is no perfect gym bag. Many bags sold as “gym bags” are indistinguishable from any duffle bag or tote. And almost any kind of bag will work as a gym bag in a pinch. A good gym bag, however, brings fresh clothes to a workout and takes wet gear home again without making everything a fragrant swamp. After researching hundreds of gym bags—traditional gym bags and others—and testing more than 40, we’ve found six bags for a range of gym goers and situations.

Did you know that beach umbrellas send some 1,000 people to the hospital each year? An astonishing number for any item, but especially for a humble piece of beach equipment. I mistrust these parasols dug precariously into the loose sand, each one a potential missile. More so, I fear the spectacle of having to chase one down the beach, apologizing as I go. Enter the Shibumi Shade, one of the simplest—and lightest—pieces of beach equipment I’ve ever seen (right up there with the beach towel).
