Conservative-led Walsall Council said it later rescinded its offer after not getting a response from Birmingham, which is run by Labour. Rubbish has been piling up on the streets of Birmingham and there have been warnings of a public health emergency as hundreds of workers have been on all-out strike for more than a month.

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering two women in a stabbing on Christmas Day in Milton Keynes. Jazwell Brown, 49, attacked Joanne Pearson, 38, and Teohna Grant, 24, at an address in Santa Cruz Avenue, Bletchley, on December 25 last year. He also tried to murder Bradley Latter, 29, and a teenage boy during the incident, in which he was carrying a kitchen knife.
