A federal judge could terminate parts of the decades-old consent decree mandating oversight of St. Croix’s John A. Bell Correctional Facility by the end of the month. Attorneys representing the United States Justice Department and the territory filed a joint motion in November asking the court to discontinue court-ordered monitoring of medical care for incarcerated people. If the motion is granted, monitoring of mental health care at the prison would continue.

The Senate Finance Committee decided to hold two bills Tuesday, including one that would offer tax relief to property owners who the government owes money. Senate President Milton Potter sponsored the bill, which initially called for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor to offset a property owner’s property tax liability against any amount of money that the Virgin Islands government owed to that property owner.

Homeowners in LBJ Gardens on St. Croix have just over two weeks to decide whether they want their properties appraised by the V.I. Housing Finance Authority as part of a proposal to buy them out of the homes where their families have lived for generations. Luz Fulgence said her LBJ Gardens home has been in the family for more than six decades. “I own it and I don’t owe nothing on it,” she said.
