Sir Andrew Cook also urged the Government ro introduce selective tariffs on Chinese steel imports and prioritise British-made steel in UK taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects. He said nationalisation should always be seen as a last resort, but that it was now the “only option left”. It comes as Sir Keir Starmer said “all options are on the table” when asked about the plant during a meeting of the Liason Committee yesterday.

Assisted dying could be legalised in England and Wales after a historic vote saw proposed legislation clear its first hurdle in Parliament. A narrow majority of MPs supported a Bill that would allow terminally ill adults with a life expectancy of less than six months to end their lives. There were at-times emotional scenes in the Commons as politicians on both sides of the debate made impassioned arguments for and against what has been described as a “major social reform”.

On a night of so many headlines on 4 July, the result in Dewsbury and Batley stood out. Coming as a shock to many, Labour’s Heather Iqbal lost the seat by almost 7,000 votes, as dissatisfaction with the party’s stance on Gaza made Mr Mohamed one of five independent MPs who won seats. An engineer and IT consultant who attended Durham University, is Dewsbury born and bred. He said his local community had been neglected by both main parties for “decades and decades”.
