Sir Charlie Mayfield has been tasked by the Government to produce an independent report entitled Keep Britain Working, looking at how the Government and businesses can work together to support ill and disabled people to stay in work. As part of the research ahead of the report’s publication, which is expected to be in October, Sir Charlie visited the Pathways to Work scheme in Barnsley.

He said he didn’t need ‘lessons’ on what life is like for working people as he took aim at the man now widely seen as his primary political opponent. Sir Keir Starmer’s comments come after Reform UK unveiled a raft of policy plans, including reversing the two-child benefit cap and winter fuel payments, and increasing benefits for married couples.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Sir Keir Starmer declined to offer more details about what the expansion of the scheme could look like, how many more people could receive the benefit, or how it would be paid for. He also said more details would be set out ‘at a fiscal event’ - likely to be the Comprehensive Spending Review in June, but potentially an Autumn budget in late October.

He was speaking after a meeting yesterday with the four Yorkshire mayors in London, at which growth promotion and new trading possibilities were discussed. It comes after deals were agreed with India, the USA and most recently the EU. In an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Sir Keir Starmer said the deals would benefit a range of sectors across the county, including car manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.

It found that the premise of private funds being used to invest in infrastructure was a ‘myth’ because: “since 1990, there has never been a year when investors put more cash into Yorkshire Water than they took out in dividends,” and the company borrowed money “simply to pay cash to their shareholders”. It said: “There never was any (net) equity investment in Yorkshire Water after the first £75 million in 1990.
