After three England greats chose not to make themselves available for Euro 2025, Sarina Wiegman has said she does not “go around the bush” when delivering selection news and that she cannot be responsible for how players react. Having announced her squad for the tournament in Switzerland, with Lauren James and the teenage forward Michelle Agyemang included, England’s Dutch head coach defended her leadership style with typical bluntness.

England’s Euro 2025 squad has now been confirmed, after a rocky build-up. Two pillars of the Euro 2022 triumph — Mary Earps and Millie Bright — have made themselves unavailable. A third, Fran Kirby, joined Earps in international retirement after Sarina Wiegman, the head coach, informed Kirby that she would not make the 23-player roster. Nevertheless, Wiegman has named a squad that features world-class operators, habitual winners and exciting young talents.

England could not have asked for a better sample of the challenge ahead at Euro 2025. They rolled with Spain’s initial punches in Barcelona and even led at half-time, but they had no answer for the world champions’ incredible depth — as embodied by Clàudia Pina. Although the 6-0 thrashing of a hapless Portugal on Friday provided welcome serenity, England’s Euros build-up has been shaky.

Don’t be fooled by the funky rules, loud music and late-season scheduling. Women’s football’s new seven-a-side tournament is not a cheap gimmick. Granted, a walk around the venue within the modest Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota in Estoril, Portugal, made last week’s inaugural World Sevens Football (W7F) event feel frivolous. One of the three temporary stands is a plush players’ lounge, from which participants watched their rivals on comfy sofas or plastic chairs.
