TOKYO -- The Japanese government will support the development of quantum encryption technology by 2030, enlisting partners potentially including Toshiba and NEC in an effort to defend against the next-generation of cyberattacks, Nikkei has learned. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will provide the assistance to selected quantum encryption developers, with applications set to begin as soon as next year.

TOKYO -- Japan's government is planning support for high-speed, light-based communications technology that could help with building more data centers outside of big cities, Nikkei has learned. The aid, which would include subsidies, could begin as early as next year. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will discuss the proposals this month.

TOKYO -- Foreign nationals in Japan earn less than their Japanese counterparts even after controlling for such factors as education and experience, according to a recent government report covering an area at the center of intense policy debate. The Cabinet Office's economic white paper for fiscal 2024 includes for the first time a section focusing specifically on Japan's more than 2 million foreign workers, finding that they earn 28% less than Japanese nationals.
