In the city of jazz, Swinging Astrid is one band pushing the envelope in the New Orleans music scene with poetic lyricism combined with an indie rock beat. The band didn’t form overnight, however. Since its formation about two years ago, the band has undergone multiple line-up changes. But this time, with this group, members say it feels different. “It’s really sick to just play with people that are as talented and passionate as they are kind and determined,” Jess Araten, the band’s guitarist, said.

Seeds are being planted in efforts to make New Orleans a greener place, thanks to the organization SOUL NOLA. Sustaining Our Urban Landscape is a nonprofit organization that has been working since 2016 to reforest parts of New Orleans. On Oct. 26, they will be celebrating a new milestone of planting their 10,000 trees. “It gets me emotional. I’m so proud,” founder and executive director of SOUL Susannah Burley said.

Chants and drums for Palestine rang through Uptown New Orleans for more than 30 hours from a pro-Palestine encampment at Tulane University – until they suddenly stopped. Loyola and Tulane students banded together for the Popular University for Gaza movement with other college students around the United States in protest of tuition dollars being used to fund Israel.

May 1, 2024 14 people were arrested in front of Tulane during the Pro-Palestine encampment involving Loyola and Tulane students on St. Charles Avenue. The encampment has been demolished, and protestors have been dispersed from the scene. Tulane, City, and State police as well as SWAT surrounded the area at approximately 3:08 am on Wednesday, May 1. Of the 14 arrested, 11 remained in the encampment on Tulane’s property, including Loyola SDS president Carson Cruse.
