Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ 4/5 StarsBack in 2020, Dave Stewart reviewed the original Poiesis Cello for Kontakt, from Sonora Cinematic, and he had a lot of very good things to say about it. Rather than straightforward cello notes, the library comprises atmospheric articulations performed by principal cellist Alan Black, so although the note might not change throughout the duration of a sample, the playing technique is often varied to give the samples an evolving, cinematic quality.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ 4/5 StarsWhile there are plenty of cello samples for those who want to recreate orchestral arrangements, Osmosis from Wrongtools takes a somewhat different direction, providing a wide palette of articulations and experimental techniques that help inspire creativity. Apparently the library takes its inspiration from experimental film scoring, with different takes and articulations being layered to create sounds that inspire the user to seek new compositional directions.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 5/5 StarsStriking Strings Glissandi adopts a fairly sharp focus that is likely to appeal to the professional or semi‑pro composer community, who frequently reach for tools with a singular purpose in mind. This is the first unique offering from JASL‑Audio, a company presided over by Jochem Weierink, a talented film composer in his own right and clearly equipped with useful insight. SSG includes just under 6GB of sampled content, divided up into four instrument patches.

Rating: 4.5/5 StarsThe Soniccouture catalogue is a beautifully crafted and varied inventory that encompasses some unique gems. Their latest release is Kora, a 21‑string harp‑like instrument emanating from Gambia that fulfils their brief perfectly. The Kora consists of strings which are stretched across a bridge, which sit abreast a gourd resonator, much like a Berimbau. Being equipped with 21 strings it provides a considerable note range of just over four octaves.

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ 4/5 StarsNorthwest Passage, described as a “sea of guitars”, is a surprisingly affordable Kontakt instrument that takes 3.7GB of bowed electric guitar samples as its source material, enhanced by some very creative processing. Its 88 instrument patches are split into Leads, Polar, Short By ADSR, Still and Turbulent. The title comes about as the library’s creators wanted to build a sound set inspired by the ocean’s changing nature.
