1 BACKGROUND Postoperative delirium (POD) is an acute state of disorientation and decreased mental function that can develop following surgery.1 Disorientation, memory, and attention deficit are some symptoms of POD. Postoperative delirium can afflict people of any age, although it is more frequent in the elderly.1, 2 Delirium, a common consequence of hospitalization in patients with cancer,3 can have significant implications for patient outcomes.
