Last summer, I saw a crowd forming outside of a home in my neighborhood, and, naturally, I needed to see what was up. I learned that an estate sale was going on, and everything in the home was for sale. Shocked, I made my way inside, oohed and ahhed over the stunning home, and left with a mother-of-pearl frame, two glass drinking glasses with gold foil, and a coffee table book—all for about $15. From then on, I was hooked.

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article. Growing up, my childhood had a living room and a family room. The main difference between the two? The family room had a sofa facing the tv, and the living room didn’t. There are no screens in the living room actually—this is the place to settle in for a chat, have a quiet cup of coffee in the morning, or relax after dinner.

This year, I aspire to be the friend who hosts dinner parties. In my head, I see a gorgeous tablescape, a glorious meal, and all of my friends chatting, laughing and having a good time. But as someone who currently doesn’t host often and is a little clumsy in the kitchen, I’d rather work my way up to this vision.

Keeping it real—I wish I was someone who loved summer. Growing up, I vacationed in New Hampshire and looked forward to funnel cake on the boardwalk, lazy days on the lake, sugary cereal, and a late bedtime. But now? I feel pressure to pack my social calendar, live my best life (in comparison to social media), and look hot while doing it. Not in the literal sense, because there is a permanent pool of sweat on my upper lip that I just wish wasn’t there. Ugh.
