Kristi Coulter was working at Amazon when she found herself in an unexpectedly easy role. She enjoyed less stress and a better work-life balance in the job, but felt guilty about coasting. Coasting gave her the chance to be confident, effective, and a better employee, she realized. One bright April afternoon several years ago, I strolled to my desk at Amazon in Seattle, freshly showered and sipping the smoothie I'd grabbed after my four-mile run.

At Amazon, “It’s Always Day One” is more than a rallying cry. It’s an ethos. It means that no matter how big the company gets, it must continue to operate with the urgency and scrappiness of a startup. “Day Oneness” at Amazon is seen as the key to fending off complacency and displacement. It’s why Amazon workers show up with a mad gleam in their eye, ready to turn bold ideas into reality on a shoestring budget and little sleep.

So to wrap up: Email comes out of nowhere announcing RTO Engineers asking managers what it means for them Managers asking HR HR only have the email everyone else got And I sense a LOT of frustration brewing across Amazon engineers… more than other RTO announcements.
