After Coco and Encanto, Elio is the third Pixar movie in the last eight years pitched at Spanish-speaking audiences, and if it is the least of those, it deserves to be mentioned alongside them. What’s frustrating is that it comes so close to greatness, or at least really goodness. However, it spends enough time headed to that place to warrant the ticket prices for you and your child.

Okay, this is easy. We’re getting more entertainment about the long-term effects of zombies because we ourselves survived a global plague that has killed some 7 million people. Thus, the TV shows The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, and now the 28 Days Later series have all reckoned with how people have adjusted to the reality of zombies and carried on, or failed to.

They’re selling Materialists as some plush New York dating comedy for the crowd that would have followed Sex and the City back in its day (as opposed to its current sequel). I’m here to tell you that it’s not that. No, underneath this movie’s posh interiors and Hollywood star power is a story that’s hard-headed to the point of cynicism about love and marriage. So this isn’t the movie that’s being sold to you. It’s something better, and one of the best movies I’ve seen this year.

At the end of the last Van Cliburn Competition, I predicted that someday the contest would be won by a pianist I was high on from the start, rather than someone I needed to talk myself into. That prediction came true during the very next edition of our esteemed piano competition, as Aristo Sham took a gold medal that I found quite gratifying. For the last two years almost, Netflix has had a Korean action-thriller called Ballerina in its catalogue. It has nothing to do with the movie by that title that is a spinoff of the John Wick series, other than it shares the idea that these tiny women in gossamer tutus whose job is to maintain total control of their body might be professional killers who receive firearms training in between practicing their jetées and pirouettes.

The semifinal round of the Van Cliburn Competition had its 12 remaining pianists playing Mozart concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The star of this stage was Conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto, who is new to the Cliburn. The Mexican maestro’s career has taken him all over America (with stints in Houston, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Washington), and while he isn’t a Mozart specialist, he could have fooled me with his seamless accompaniment of the very different semifinalists.
