    It is that time of year again when the community of Sandstone puts together their Christmas celebration. This year, Quarry City Christmas will take place on On Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024. It is uncertain when the tradition of Quarry City Christmas started, but members of the Sandstone History Museum say it’s been an activity for at least seven years. There are also additional years, but under a different name, one of the committee members mentioned.

    The most recent census on agriculture in Pine County reveals some interesting changes from 2017 to 2022. In 2022, there were a total of 728 farms in Pine County, consisting of 164,801 acres. The average size of a farm in the County is 226 acres. Since 2017, the number of farms has decreased by 12%, but the average size of the farm in acres has increased by 16%. The market value of products sold from Pine County totaled approximately $58 million, which is 49% higher than in the year 2017.

    This is a story of how a single mom reignited her passion for her favorite instruments: the piano and organ. Glenna Reierson is from a small town in Central Minnesota. There, Reiserson went to school and was one of the children that took piano lessons. By 15, she was out of the county school and in the town school. There she played the piano for school functions. At 15, Reierson was approached by the local pastor about playing for her church, and she agreed.

    On Nov. 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first commemoration of the Armistice signed on Nov. 11, 1918, between Allied nations and Germany that marked the end of World War I. Nov. 11, was then designated as a national holiday in 1938, and it became officially Veterans Day in 1954, to acknowledge the sacrifice of American soldiers in World War l, World War II, the Korean War and to celebrate all veterans. Thank you to all those that have served.

    As Veteran’s Day has come and gone. Let’s talk about the specifics of our Vet’s and flag burning. Flag burning, there is no information on when this tradition started. But, the information about these ceremonies that we do know is that the Veteran’s burn no longer usable flags for honor, dignity and respect. According to Dave Will, Post 151 Commander, it’s not considered burning to them, it’s considered retirement. Post 151 has multiple drop boxes for citizens to drop their flags off to be retired.
