Many people recently returned from the European Coatings Show and Conference, held March 24-27 in Nuremberg, Germany. The PCI staff spent three full days meeting with suppliers to the coatings industry, learning about technology launches and discussing the latest trends, challenges and solutions the industry faces. While we didn’t have time to meet with all 1,216 exhibitors, we did our best! Below is a recap of several of our meetings, giving you a snapshot of what was showcased at the ECS.

The event was hosted by Indicon and TeraView, who have partnered to develop an integrated terahertz robotic solution.

Kristin Johansson, Chief Editor, PCI I had an interesting conversation recently with a DIY painter and inventor from California regarding his new invention. On December 17, 2024, Jason McLoud was issued Patent No. U.S. 12,168,548 B2 for a new tool called CanPal, a crescent-shaped, ergonomic grip that snaps onto a paint can’s existing wire handle. Additionally, the CanPal can be detached from the wire handle to be used as an ever-ready can opener.

September kicked off the fall show season with the Coatings Trends & Technologies Summit, which was a huge success. The event had 480 attendees and 89 exhibitors, with 50 companies renewing their exhibit or sponsorship on-site for next year. You can mark your calendars now for the CTT Summit 2025, which will take place September 3-5, again at the Westin Lombard in the Chicago area.

I’m excited to announce that Paint & Coatings Industry magazine has presented the 2024 PCI Lifetime Achievement Award to Joanne Hardy, who retired from Axalta Coating Systems in late 2023. The award recognizes an individual who, during the course of his or her career, has made outstanding contributions to the coatings industry. The winner is announced at our annual Coatings Trends & Technologies Summit in Lombard, IL.

If you have been reading my Viewpoint column for a while you know that I like to find paint and coatings connections whenever I travel. My family vacation this summer continued the trend, as I found myself thinking about coatings during our Mediterranean cruise from Athens to Barcelona. In the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, we toured the House of Menander, a villa left standing after Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the town in 19 feet of ash and other volcanic debris on August 24, 79 AD.
