Rooted in the traditions of his Lumbee lineage, Howard Jacobs embraces his journey at NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), blending legislative policy with a heart for agriculture. Growing up in Pembroke, North Carolina, Jacobs became interested in agriculture in high school when a classmate invited him to an FFA meeting. He learned about greenhouse production, parliamentary procedure, leadership, fundraising and land-grant universities.

Growing up on a farm in southern Ontario, Canada, Walgren has always been deeply connected to agriculture. With a bachelor’s in electrical engineering and a master’s in biology, she now leads sustainability efforts at Gaia Herbs in North Carolina.

The start of a new semester is the perfect time to find your Pack! NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) offers over 30 clubs and organizations for students. The Agri-Life Council unites these groups, promoting leadership through fellowship, scholarship and service, serving as the voice for all CALS clubs. Caroline Becker, Agri-Life president, is pursuing double majors in general agriculture and livestock and poultry management through the Agricultural Institute.

Charlie McGhee envisions running a small farm in King, North Carolina, while pursuing a career in agribusiness. Though his great-grandparents were sharecroppers, McGhee didn’t grow up in an agricultural household. However, he’s taken an academic path to reconnect to his farming roots by pursuing associate’s degrees in and agribusiness management through the Agricultural Institute (AGI) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS).
CALS Adventures Abroad

Every year students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) passionately pursue their studies abroad, immersing themselves in a variety of cultures and gaining global perspectives on their majors. CALS offers numerous study abroad opportunities each semester. The summer 2024 study abroad programs included 11 courses in nine countries ranging from Poland to Japan. About 50 CALS students have studied abroad since 2022.
New Ph.D. Program Boosts Agricultural and Human Sciences

Big changes are coming to the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences (AHS) in NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. AHS will offer a new Ph.D. degree that converts the department’s current Ed.D. curricula into a comprehensive program, synthesizing a youth and family focus with agricultural and extension education. This change will benefit current and future graduate students studying any AHS discipline.
Matchmaking for Career Success

When NC State University undergraduate Sarah Bailey and alumna Nicole Youngblood first met at N.C. Cooperative Extension’s Johnston County Center, it seemed like destiny. Bailey recognized Youngblood’s name during an October 2023 field trip with NC State’s Rurally Engaged Agricultural Leaders (REAL) program, an initiative for students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who are interested in agriculture, rural communities, leadership and extension work.

When Isatou (pronounced eye-sa-too) Kah was 16 years old, a routine checkup revealed she was severely anemic. Her pediatrician gave her one option: get a blood transfusion. Kah realized she wanted to take control of her health. This revelation launched a mission to explore alternatives and find nutritional methods to improve her iron levels. “I began online research for dietary options to help supplement my iron,” Kah says.
