Amidst all the chaos brought on by Trump’s tariff threats, Canada’s federal trade minister celebrated a minor win this month: the finalization of a trade agreement with Ecuador. At this point, you might think that any trade deal with the potential to lessen Canada’s dependence on our southern neighbour is a good thing. Unfortunately, this Ecuador deal does not have such powers.

Keystone XL was set to become one of the largest pipelines of its kind in North America. As an extension of the existing Keystone pipeline network, owned and operated by the Canadian firm TC Energy, the project was extremely controversial due to concerns about potential leaks along the pipeline route from Alberta to Nebraska as well as significant . In 2021, the United States government revoked a key permit needed by TC Energy to complete the project.

Today the European Union gave notice of its withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty. There is still much to do. The European Union officially decided in late May to withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), a little-known but insidious legal agreement which investors can use to sue national governments and the EU over climate policies. While welcome news to climate campaigners, the exit, which follows that of several individual countries, is not the death-knell for the treaty.

US$20 billion: That’s how much American investors think Canadian taxpayers should fork over to compensate them for their failed bid to develop a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Québec. That’s almost a fifth of the province’s total budget for this year. Ruby River Capital LLC, the U.S.-based owner of GNL Québec Inc., filed a claim against Canada under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) after its Énergie Saguenay project failed to pass a federal environmental impact assessment.
