    On Tuesday Corner Brook Mayor Jim Parsons announced the name of the city’s new recreation facility. It will be known as The Marina Redmond Centre. Parsons was joined by members of the council, staff, community partners, and Redmond’s friends and family. Redmond served the city for 27 years, including 23 years as City Clerk, before her passing in 2024. She also had a passion for sports and recreation and was a multi-sport athlete. The site will open to the general public on Saturday, May 24.

    On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada maintained its target for the overnight rate at 2.75 percent, with the Bank Rate at 3 percent and the deposit rate at 2.70 percent. The bank said the reasoning behind sticking with the rate is due to the shift in the direction of US trade policy and the unpredictability of tariffs. Canadian growth has weakened and inflation remains around the 2 percent target.

    Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology Andrew Parsons announced a non-repayable investment of $650,000 from the Research and Innovation Fund to develop a virtual research and training facility that uses digital twin technology at College of the North Atlantic, in partnership with GRi Simulations on Tuesday. The project will establish a virtual research and training facility at the college that is tailored to the mining industry and uses data from key mine sites.
