I was talking with an acquaintance a few days ago when they brought up that they had just met someone else who works in agriculture and had been really fascinated by what they had to say about the industry. Especially as the topic of inputs and resource scarcity came up, they told me that they hadn’t really considered how those concepts impacted farms and food security.

I was up in Traverse City, Michigan, for a short vacation earlier this summer, including a few days on the beaches near Sleeping Bear Dunes. For as hot as this summer has been, we lucked into a few slightly more mild days, and I was more than happy to spend some time finishing reading The Parrot and the Igloo in a small beach tent near the water while gulls screeched overhead.

Before Jim Reid, CAIS, CID, was president of Reid Brothers Irrigation & Equipment, Americus, Georgia, he spent years working on his family’s farm, picking up experience in the field. The Irrigation Association, Fairfax, Virginia, connected members with elected officials and federal agencies to discuss policies affecting the industry during its annual fly-in event in Washington, D.C., March 19-21. Topics of discussion included the farm bill, business policy and guest worker programs. For Natalie Stone, senior manager of utility B2B at Rachio, Denver, Colorado, the experience meant providing context on industry topics to legislators. This was her first year attending.
