A small fire at Southern Kings Consolidated School was extinguished without issue between 2 and 3 pm on Wednesday said Matt MacLeod, Public Schools Branch senior communications officer. The Murray River Fire Department responded to the fire which one parent said was with one of the radiators near the main entrance. “All students were evacuated safely onto buses,” MacLeod said.

From 1894 to 1978, Therese Mair’s family general store run by Harry Yorston sat at the corner of Kent Street and Richmond Street in Georgetown. They sold everything from lard, cheese and eggs to nails, bolts and cloth. When Yorston passed away, Bea Mair, Therese’s aunt took over the store and turned it into a family museum. When Bea passed away it was passed on to Therese, who still operates it today.

The town of Souris is purchasing a property at 32 Lea Crane Blvd for the town’s maintenance garage for a total of $433,155.66, plus HST, which will be covered by the municipal capital expenditures grant. The town will be financing the property through Souris Credit Union with $430,000 being the agreed upon capital purchase. The extra $3,155.66 will come out of the town’s operating budget, said CAO Shelley LaVie. “There’s no set date to be in,” she said.

Family and friends of long-time horse racer and breeder Ralph Annear gathered at the John Gillis Lodge in Belfast as he was presented with the Kent Oakes Industry Builder Award, on Wednesday, April 16. As Souris native Dawson Sharkey skated off the ice at the KC. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst for one final time, he took a moment to reflect on what the city meant to him throughout his two years as a member of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. The Titan are set to relocate to St John’s, Newfoundland to start the 2025-26 season and will play under the name the Newfoundland Regiment.
