As Freddy Peralta worked into the middle innings of another strong outing on Sunday, his fourth in a row with at least five innings pitched and two runs or fewer allowed, Tim Dillard made a significant observation, noting that Peralta was having significant success throwing his changeup and curveball early in counts. The point was correct but may have been understated: Against right-handed batters it’s significant that Peralta was throwing his curve and changeup at all.

The Milwaukee Brewers have reached the postseason in six of the last seven seasons, including four seasons where they won the National League Central. Somehow, they’ve been able to maintain that extended run of success while routinely asking their front office to do more with less. The Brewers have only been in the top half of MLB teams in Opening Day payrolls twice this century: In 2008 when they were 15th, and in 2012 when they were 13th.

Not much has been consistent across the Brewers’ first couple of weeks, but the ace of their starting rotation has been the exception. Freddy Peralta was one of the top performers in the Brewers’ disastrous opening series in New York, allowing just two runs (a pair of solo home runs) across five innings on Opening Day. He turned it up another level against the Royals at home in his second start, however, allowing just one run on two hits across eight innings.

The Brewers certainly had a weekend to forget in New York, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of the season will follow the same track. Brewers pitchers gave up 36 runs across three games against the Yankees, allowed 15 home runs and needed a position player to pitch to record the final outs twice while getting swept at Yankee Stadium in a historic meltdown to open their campaign.

One of the most successful eras in Milwaukee Brewers history has, as you might expect, coincided with a significant run of notable individual performances.

Perhaps it's fitting that an article of compiled obituaries will also be my last article share on Twitter. Effective 1/1/25 I'm no longer posting here and moving over to the same handle on Bluesky. Thanks for following here, and hopefully I'll see you there.

The last piece I post each year is the longest and (to me at least) maybe the most important, as we take a moment to look back at those who passed away during the year. Thanks to @shepherdexpress for hosting it once again this year: https://t.co/r6vXNh69Ke

If the MLB offseason were a nine inning game, today we'd be starting the top of the second inning.
