That’s a wrap, folks. The 2024-2025 regular season is officially over and what a ride it was. At the end of it all, the Red Wings put up a 39-35-8 record and, obviously, missed the playoffs. The more I reflect on this season, the less upset I am with missing out on the postseason. Why you might ask? It really comes down to the coaching change.

It’s the moment so many of us have been waiting for. The Red Wings announced Tuesday afternoon that forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka to the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins from Skellefteå AIK of the Swedish Hockey League. ASP and MBN, as they are known among Red Wings fans, are two of Steve Yzerman’s most-recent first-round selections — ASP was taken 17th overall in 2023, while MBN was pick no. 15 in 2024.

Red Wings RumblingsIt’s finally official — the Red Wings have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. It’s amazing that it took this long for it to happen. It wasn’t as close of a miss as it was last season when Washington slipped by only to get the brakes beaten off of them in the first round, but at least they survived late into the season… if you’re looking for a moral victory or whatever. Congratulations are in order for former Red Wings coach Pat Ferschweiler.

Red Wings RumblingsThere are four games left in the season, the Red Wings lost last night, and somehow this team is STILL not eliminated from the playoff picture. For some reason, I am reminded of the scene in Gladiator where Commodus says to Maximus: “What am I going to do with you? You simply won’t die.”No but seriously, Detroit’s playoff chances will likely go up in smoke this weekend, and while last night’s loss didn’t help one way, it did bump them up one spot in the draft order! WOOHOO.
