After confirming that all three of the nation's largest airlines were quietly charging solo and business travelers higher fares and an ensuing uproar last week, all but one carrier has pulled the plug on those fares: American Airlines. And it's also the most egregious user of that pricing tactic – far beyond the “hit or miss” our research initially suggested.

A week after causing an uproar by charging some solo passengers significantly higher fares than groups of two or more, American Airlines continues employing that pricing tactic on dozens of domestic routes. But after backtracking briefly while the story was dominating national headlines last week, United resumed penalizing single flyers on some routes Thursday, too.

Delta began removing the fares that hit solo travelers with significantly higher prices on Friday afternoon, according to a person with knowledge of that action, rapidly retreating after a national blowback against the nation's three largest airlines latest pricing tactic. A quick search from our flight deal analysts of Delta's fares confirms it: Where Delta was charging single passengers higher fares on select domestic one-way fares as recently as this morning, that's no longer the case.

One of the wilder parts of how this whole story has unfolded is the chorus of (mainly) aviation insiders saying “Airlines employ pricing discrimination all the time!” As if everyday travelers should simply say: “Pretty please may I have some more?!!”
