I’ve been an X-ray and CT technologist for almost ten years, and I’ve always taken pride in my work. But nothing could have prepared me—or any of us—for what the COVID-19 pandemic brought. It wasn’t just the virus itself; it was the way it exposed the cracks in our health care system, the way it pushed us all to our limits, and the way it changed how we saw our work, our patients, and each other.

By Kyle Wells Photo by K E on Unsplash I recently read a "study" about our smelling capabilities. You know, how we kind of can sniff each other out? The study suggests we like some stank better than others. Who stanky? You stanky, and I might prefer your stank to others.

Back in October of 2010, one of my all time favorite punk rock n roll bands came to Cleveland by way of So-Cal. I had just seen them a year before in nearby Youngstown, Ohio. The venue in Youngstown was great, plenty of standing room for Social Distortion's "veteran" fans like myself. I stood back with the other veteran fans and enjoyed it immensely. Another Tale of Human ComplexityGramps is long gone. Died in the 90s. I never knew any other paternal grandfather. My Dad's real father was gone before I could remember. My Step-Gramps was - to my memory - kind, humorous, tough as nails, and a WW2 combat vet. He was a former boxer and had a nose as flat as a pancake. It was fantastic. He also loved to bake - no, not get stoned, actual baking cookies and shit. Oh, did I mention? He was also a racist. I knew this about him at a young age.

I consider myself a pretty tolerant person. There are not a lot of things I despise, but I must confess, I simply cannot stand Country Music. I was strolling through a Dollar General store this morning and the first thing that jumped to my attention was the - weirdly loud - music pumping through the sound system. It was a country gospel song. Okay, so it is Sunday morning, but I'm at a Dollar General, not some local Baptist Church. But that's not the most annoying part.
