The City of Grand Rapids, in partnership with Priority Health and Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., is hosting the ninth annual summer of free outdoor fitness in parks and public spaces across the city. The 16 dance, cardio, and yoga classes will run weekly from May 13 to Aug. 22. Classes will be held weekly, Monday through Thursday. All classes are free of charge, no registration required.

If you have an idea to improve your community, you could receive up to $15,000 in funding by the Urban League of West Michigan. The Opportunity Empowered program is a partnership between the league and Heart of West Michigan United Way, in hopes of turning residents’ grassroots ideas into reality. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a proclamation declaring April 11-17 as Black Maternal Health Week in Michigan to honor the prenatal through postpartum experiences of Black mothers. “During Black Maternal Health Week, we affirm our commitment to ensuring that every Black woman in Michigan receives access to quality, affordable maternal and infant health care,” said Governor Whitmer.

Michigan’s apple, cherry, peach, and plum producers have approved a referendum to continue the Michigan Tree Fruit Research and Development Program. Established in April 2014, Michigan Tree Fruit Research and Development Program was developed to improve the economic position and competitiveness of the Michigan tree fruit industry by supporting the fruit research stations, research and extension programs.

Meijer has announced a surprise $2 million donation to 30 food bank partners across the Midwest. The funds seek to battle hunger, by feeding into local community food banks which Meijer hopes will create a positive ripple effect across the area. "We recognize the vital role food banks play in addressing hunger and are proud to stand alongside our partners to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity," said Rick Keyes, President & CEO of Meijer.
