Area residents brought forth concerns regarding curriculum at the monthly meeting of the Mount Union Area School District School Board Monday evening. Members of the board, with a vote of 8-2, approved a proposal from Houghton Mifflin Harcot for a new elementary reading series, Into Reading, for a six-year period, effective in the 2025-26 school year at a cost of $249,051.84. The costs of this series will be covered by the Ready to Learn Block Grant.

During the public comment segment of the meeting, Cheryl Barnes, who is a resident of Wayne Township, questioned board member Dwayne Gearhart specifically about why he abstained from the vote to accept Smith’s reported retirement at the March board meeting.
