When considering intestinal biology, one can draw uncanny parallels to the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, defined by gradual undulations of the land, scattered with vineyards of the old world. Tuscan hills and valleys maximize the surface area of the land and provide variation in the ecosystem to support the diversity of wine produced in such a small space. The villi and crypts of the small intestines provide the large surface area required for nutrient absorption.
