OROVILLE – The contents of a 1936 Girl Scout first aid kit caused a kerfuffle downtown on Friday that resulted in a response from the Oroville Police Department bomb squad and the closing of the 1300 block of Huntoon Street for a short time. The event took place at the Argonaut Parlor No. 8, Native Sons of the Golden West headquarters at 1332 Huntoon Street when member Karen Von Bargen was sorting through a box of her deceased mother’s antiques.

Depending on the culture or religion the Epiphany is either January 6 or the first Sunday falling between January 2 and January 8 so, that makes this Epiphany weekend. Epiphany is a celebration of God manifesting as the baby Jesus and marks the day the Magi, or the three kings, visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It’s also, according to a friend, the deadline for de-Christmasing the house which is what I’ll be doing today and tomorrow. I de-Hanukkahed our home before Christmas.

Two to three times a week I work with other volunteers to distribute food. If you think food scarcity isn’t real, think again. I see hundreds of people every month who are hungry. It’s rough sometimes, heartbreaking, a national crime really in this country of plenty that any citizen goes without food.

OROVILLE – Caltrans has completed the beautification projects at the Highway 70 gateways into the city. The dual-site projects at the Highway 70 and Highway 162 and Montgomery Street interchanges is one of 126 similar projects along state highway systems funded through Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2022 $1.2 billion Caltrans Clean California initiative. The initiative funding for the Oroville project is $1.6 million and features art tile and metal mosaics, dry creek beds and non-irrigation landscaping.
