This is why high school athletes have lately been using social media to build their presence and gain widespread recognition. The use of social media has become a key point in the journey of the modern day athlete, acting as a very powerful resource. “It (social media) can be a positive and a negative in many ways,” said Athletics Director Jim Inskeep.

Carmel football looks to the future after former coach John Hebert steps down

John Hebert, CHS’s former head football coach, recently stepped down after an exceptional 30-year tenure at the school. Over the course of his 10 years as head coach, Hebert led the football team to two state championships and six regional titles, cementing his legacy as an immensely successful coach in the program’s history. However, while Hebert’s athletic and in-game accomplishments are widely recognized, it is his impact beyond the field which has left a lasting impression.

Alexandra “Alex” Shackell, Olympic swimmer and senior, started competitive swimming when she was only 6 years old, after she said her parents had encouraged her to join. She ended up loving the sport, and now has practice 10 times every week. But while it was her parents who got her started in swimming, now she said she feels the most pressure to perform from herself. “Obviously I want to make my family, teammates and coaches proud, but most of the pressure I feel is internal,” Shackell said.

Catalina Ufor, volleyball player and sophomore, started playing volleyball when she was 13 years old. She said she loves how her sport has helped her grow, and learn to overcome obstacles and enjoys how the competition pushes her to get better. While she finds positives, she also said she dislikes the stress that comes with being on this school’s volleyball team. “School season is just every day, volleyball, volleyball and volleyball,” Ufor said.
The cell phone ban is both helpful and detrimental to students

With the implementation of the new cell phone ban in schools all around Indiana, students and staff are experiencing the benefits and drawbacks of the ban. The policy, Senate Bill 185, states that cell phones cannot be used in a classroom during direct instruction or student work time. However, teachers can allow students to use their wireless devices for educational purposes or to manage healthcare. According to the Harvard Gazette, 77% of U.S. schools have adopted a policy similar to CHS.
Football players, coach discuss impact of first game on season

For Anthony Coellner, junior and football player, football has always been a sport where he can learn and improve while connecting with his teammates. As the starting quarterback, Coellner has a large role in the team’s play, and he said his goal for the season is to help his team win. “Win a State title, that’s definitely the goal,” Coellner said, “We’re all kind of saying it, the coaches are kind of saying it too.”To get to that level, though, the team has to start somewhere.
Men’s tennis to compete in John Shirley Invitational.

The men’s tennis team will compete in the John Shirley Invitational at CHS on Aug. 31. They will play against North Central, West Lafayette, Munster, Terre Haute South and Brebeuf. Andrew Kim, tennis player and junior, said that the team is less dominant this year compared to previous years. “We all know that this year it’s gonna be harder to win,” Kim said, “We all obviously want to win.”To prepare for the team’s first invitational of the season, Kim said that there are few changes to practice.
