The 2024 qualifying final between the Swans and Giants was quite simply one of, if not the greatest, game of Australian rules ever played in NSW. There have, of course, been highlight moments before. Think Tony Lockett in the 1996 preliminary final, Nick Davis’s semi-final heroics against Geelong and even more recently Buddy Franklin’s 1000th goal, which saw thousands of fans storm the field. But no game has ebbed and flowed quite like the one that graced the SCG on September 7, 2024.

The Giants are set to demand a change in mindset and improved physicality around the contest this weekend after an “embarrassing” midfield performance in their loss to the Western Bulldogs. On the back of a firing Marcus Bontempelli, the Bulldogs dominated the stoppages in Canberra during their 32-point win. Josh Kelly admits there might be a few exchanges between the Saints and Giants this weekend as Ross Lyon’s side continues to make plays for off-contract GWS players. St Kilda are believed to have offered the biggest deal in AFL history to young midfielder Finn Callaghan – around $18 million over 10 years – to tempt him away from Western Sydney earlier this season. The 21-year-old eventually rejected the bid and recommitted to the Giants.

The rejuvenation of Australian hockey took another massive step on Saturday night as youngsters starred for both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras in their FIH Pro League matches against Spain. The Aussie women made it two consecutive wins against Spain as they came away with a 3-1 victory in front of a pulsating crowd of more than 2,800 fans at Sydney Olympic Park. Earlier in the night, the men were dominant in their 1-1 draw before falling to defeat in the ensuing shootout, 3-0.
