Republicans have made their bed — now they have to sleep in it. The party has won a decisive victory this election cycle, taking control of the presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Supreme Court has a conservative supermajority made up of three justices appointed by Trump himself, and the federal appellate courts are largely conservative as well. Trump will stack his administration with loyalists, not institutionalists, this time around.

There are a lot of reasons to complain about current political, economic and social realities in the U.S. But there are also reasons to protect the systems in place that work, which are many. One of the first things I noticed a couple years ago when I traveled to India, my grandfather’s homeland, is that no one follows traffic law. It’s not that traffic laws don’t exist on the books, though — drivers simply don’t follow them. On the streets of Mumbai and Delhi, it’s every man for himself.

My immediate Pittsburgh neighbors believe we live on perhaps the loveliest block in Squirrel Hill, a street so semi-rural that it lacks sidewalks but hosts a seemingly 24-7 population of young deer. I don’t disagree, but I also know that I live in the Mon Valley, a.k.a. Steel Valley, named for the huge river—Monongahela—that allowed it to host America’s premier industrial powerhouse for many decades. Now it’s mostly all gone.
