I saw the above quote, which is by Iris Murdoch, the other day and wondered: Is it true? Is every book the wreck of a perfect idea? My first thought was yes, because an idea may be perfect in a way its execution can never live up to it, and most of us who write have encountered the disenchantment of words on the page failing to capture the magic of the half-imagined dream.

I obsess about them myself, writing multiple versions and trying different angles and entry points into the story before I hit on the one that feels right. And while there are a lot things I want my openings to accomplish, they really only have one job: to set a hook. What exactly is “setting the hook”?
