With both the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks having two of the worst starts to the season that either side could have imagined, tonight represented a great opportunity for either team to get their campaign back on track. Watching the game, you’d never have known it.

When the San Jose Sharks chose to ice a roster that barely resembled an NHL team in 2023-24, a large part of what kept fans going was the hope that the team could put itself in pole position to draft Macklin Celebrini and break a years-long streak of failure. And when the team won the draft lottery, the celebrations around the fanbase resembled those not seen since the heady days of the Game 7 comeback against Vegas in 2019.

A lot of ink has been spilled on just how incredible San Jose’s forward prospects are and how shrewd an acquisition Yaroslav Askarov is for the team’s future in net. But perhaps the most underrated part of the pool is the team’s defensive core, with a good amount of high-end talent flying under the radar. Luca Cagnoni might be the best example of this. The San Jose Sharks moved up three spots in the first round of the upcoming NHL draft, trading the 14th and 42nd overall picks to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for the 11th overall. The trade sees General Manager Mike Grier move the team into pole position to draft a top defenseman, which would fill a gaping hole in the team’s prospect pool.

Although Mike Grier has made no secret of his intentions to pick Macklin Celebrini with the first overall pick, his plans for the team’s other first-rounder, at #14 #11 overall, are far murkier. The general manager of the Sharks has expressed a willingness to move up or down, depending on the state of play on draft day, and has repeatedly said that he is likely to take the best player available to him in that range rather than drafting for positional need.
