The .500 Rule, requiring a 50% or better head-to-head win-loss record, is a factor in team selection. The women's Magic Number is estimated around 56, while the men's is around 68. Few upsets are expected this year, minimizing significant changes to the Magic Numbers. The conference championship season is upon us, and that means it is time to crunch the numbers.

The 2023-24 college golf season is upon us, which has our minds looking ahead to the postseason awards. Sure, the summer just ended, but it’s never too early to look ahead. Highlighting Golfweek’s 2023-24 preseason men’s college golf All-Americans is no other than Nick Dunlap, the sophomore at Alabama who lit the amateur golf scene on fire this summer with his numerous victories, none bigger than his triumph in the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club outside of Denver.

Again, the No. 1 team and the No. 1 seed are absent from the championship winner’s circle. Top-ranked Vanderbilt struggled to even advance to match play this week. No. 2 Illinois falls again match play. Stroke-play champions and third-ranked North Carolina continue a trend that has seen the top team in stroke play lose in bracket play 13 out of 14 years. Instead, we have two teams that were amongst the best all season long, just not at the top. Florida and Georgia Tech played for the title.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Virginia will be one of two teams moving onto match play for the first time. Florida will join the Cavaliers in bracket play here at Grayhawk Golf Club, host of the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. The top eight teams after 72 holes of stroke play will now go head-to-head to decide the NCAA champion. Virginia is the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Florida in the opening round.
