People-pleasing is a pattern of behaviour that involves prioritising other people’s needs, requests, feelings or expectations above and beyond one’s own personal boundaries or preferences. It often results in one saying yes when they really want to say no, and doing so in an attempt to avoid disappointment, conflict or criticism from others. In most cases, people-pleasing behaviour is deep-seated in childhood conditioning.

In 2024, the world has never been filled with more noise, distraction and reasons to live in a perpetually overwhelmed state. Attention has become one of our greatest currencies, and it has become increasingly more difficult to block out the noise, minimise distractions and focus in on the work that actually matters. Learning to stop worrying about the things that you can’t change and instead, focusing on what you can control, is what I refer to as productive progress.

“No.” A complete sentence, and one of the hardest for women to say, is about to get easier in the workplace with the new ‘Right to Disconnect’ law taking effect today, August 26th. The ‘Right to Disconnect’ law will be enshrined in the Australian Fair Work Act and will provide employees the right to disconnect from all work communication outside their usual work hours.
