The man walking toward me was splattered with blood. His forearms were stained a pale magenta, his cheeks spattered with red flecks. The crumpled hide of a deer lay in a heap against the wall of the building behind him. Skinny hooved legs stuck out of 50-gallon oil drums nearby. It was like a scene out of a horror film. But instead of brandishing a machete or a chain saw, the man with the bloodstained forearms carried a stubby pencil and a clipboard. “Dropping off?” he asked.

On Election Day four years ago, I drove to my local firehouse to cast my vote for Joe Biden. But as I went to enter the building, I froze for a moment; my neighbor, a man who has a giant billowing Trump flag on his lawn, was manning the door. Each of us knew exactly who the other was voting for, and I briefly wondered if we ought to hate each other for it. But by that point, I’d spent a decade as a Democrat living in Trump Country.

Is fear generational, is it innate, or does it become an essential necessity one must learn to survive at the level one decides is best for themselves. It certainly can be protective, even life saving. But can it prevent you from experiencing incredible thrills, immense joy, overwhelming self satisfaction. Not sure about generational but I accept the fact it can be innate.

As a freshman at Stuyvesant H.S. I was reading Thoreau and got it into my head that I wanted to help (in my mind) an elderly farmer who would be dragging a plow with the reins around his neck in back of a work horse. Well, I discovered the NYS Farm Cadet Program, became a volunteer for a summer and landed at The Peters Homestead in Callicoon NY.

Here are some things I have taught the kids who visit my farm: animals don’t care about your feelings, and sometimes we kill them to eat them. It doesn’t matter how desperately you want to find more eggs, the hens don’t lay on demand. Tomatoes aren’t ripe in June. The stalls aren’t going to clean themselves. Cuts, scrapes, and stings aren’t really a big deal. And there will always be poop.
