Golf in the Coachella Valley in the summer is quite different from desert golf in the winter or spring. In the winter and spring, the demand for tee times at desert courses is at its peak, especially in the last five years as golf participation has surged since the Covid-19 pandemic. That means fewer chances to play for the average or casual player, and generally higher green fees as demand overwhelms supply in the shorter and busier days of the winter and spring.

The U.S. Open is considered the most democratic of major championships. That’s because golf’s national championship in this country is open to anyone with an entry fee and a qualifying handicap index. But it is difficult path as was proven again Monday when 10 sectional qualifiers were played.

• Indian Wells Golf Resort is adding misting systems to golf carts to combat summer heat and encourage play. • The system, installed by Cooler Carts, uses water and fans to cool golfers by 30-35 degrees. • The resort also offers mango-scented iced towels and free popsicles or ice cream bars to further enhance player comfort. Misting systems in the summer in the desert are as common as palm trees, it seems.
