The Palm Springs Power want to win games and entertain fans each time the club hits the field at Palm Springs Stadium this summer. But the overriding mission of the team is to find places for Power players to play baseball at a higher level. "It's player advancement, that's the term I would utilize," said Andrew Starke, the founder of the Power, which is entering its 21st season in the desert. "It's us finding players and helping them advance their careers.

Eva Karlstrom believes her son Kent’s slightly altered path to a Division I golf scholarship at Arizona State began when he was in first grade at the private Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage. “If you stand on the top of the playground (at Palm Valley), you can look over and see the golf course at Mission Hills Country Club,” Eva said. “He used to stand there and look over there to the course. Misting systems in the summer in the desert are as common as palm trees, it seems. Restaurants encouraging outdoor dining in triple-digit heat or pretty much any place that hosts an outdoor gathering have some misting system, at times leaving nearby sidewalks in a cloud of mist. Even the desert’s music festivals provide limited misting systems for attendees in April. At Coachella Valley golf courses, misting systems are generally limited to outdoor dining areas for restaurants.

Sometimes when a lower seeded team makes a deep run in the playoffs it feels like destiny. That is definitely not what head coach David Shaw thinks about his Rancho Mirage High School baseball team. "Our expectations were this since last season," Shaw said after the Rattlers advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 semifinals with a 6-0 home win over St. Monica on a breezy Friday afternoon.

Before Thursday's CIF-Southern Section boys' golf team qualifying tournament, Palm Desert High School head coach Chuck Mazet reminded his team they only needed to finish in the top four of the 14-team tournament to take another step toward a possible state championship. Fourth would have been nice, but winning the qualifying tournament at Temecula Creek Inn was even better, the Aztecs said.

Here's some frustration for @pdhsofficial boys golf. Stephenson School of Pebble Beach won the @CIF state title Tuesday at Poppy Hills, with De La Salle of Concord 2nd, Santa Margarita 3rd. Those teams finished 3rd, 4th and 6th in Champions Invite won by Palm Desert in April
