BRISTOL — Grayson County had an impressive showing at the Virginia High School League Class 1 State Wrestling Tournament, held March 1 at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den. Grundy finished first with a team score of 278.5 points. Rural Retreat finished second with 192; Grayson County third, with 171.5; Bath County fourth, with 88.5; and Holston rounded out the top five with 85.5 points.

PENN LAIRD — Spotswood outscored Carroll County 44-29 in the second period to silence the Cavaliers 71-52 in the Class 3 state quarterfinal game played March 4. The Cavaliers, who finished off an outstanding 23-3 season in the Three Rivers District, played in its first state playoff tournament game since 2013. Spotswood (24-3) is a member of the Valley District.

ROANOKE — The Galax Maroon Tide girls ended their basketball season on Feb. 28 with a 56-38 setback to George Wythe in the Region 1C semifinals, played at Northside High School. Galax didn’t give up in the match against the highly-favored Maroons. They closed out their season with a (19-4) record. George Wythe (23-3) rolled over Fort Chiswell (20-6) 47-39 on March 1 to win the Region 1C title and advance to the state playoffs this weekend.

HENRICO — Two members if the Grayson County Blue Devil wrestling team qualified for the Virgnia High School League girls state championships, held last week at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen. Just a year after winning the first girls wrestling state championship for Grayson County High School, Isabella Hill made it back-to-back titles. She claimed the title in the 138-pound weight class over Dinwiddie County’s Sydney Ogburn in the championship match.

PEARISBURG — The Grayson County Blue Devils won the Region 1B/C Wrestling Championship held at Giles County High School on Feb. 14. Four wrestlers won their individual championships to lead the Blue Devils with 231.5 points, while the Galax Maroon Tide was second with 186.6 points. Parry McCluer was third with 146.5 points.

INDEPENDENCE — The Goad brothers scored 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to beat the undefeated Fort Chiswell Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game played Jan. 22. Makray Goad led the Blue Devils with 22 points in the 57-47 game. Grayson had eight players to score in the game. Owen Jackson took scoring honors for the Pioneers with 25, while teammate Brayden Billings contributed 15. The Pioneers (13-0) took the early lead at 17-8 after the first period.

SALEM — It took Auburn less than hour to claim its 6th consecutive Class 1 State Volleyball Championship in a match played Nov. 23 at the Salem Civic Center. The Eagles were on fire as they demolished Rappahannock by scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-16. Auburn, a member of the Mountain Empire District, has won nine championships over the past 13 years. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 29-2. One of the losses was at the hands of the Grayson County Blue Devils.

HOT SPRINGS — The Grayson County Blue Devils dominated from start to finish for a 20-0 victory over unbeaten Bath County in the Class 1C Region Championship football game on Nov. 29, punching their ticket to the state 1C semifinals. No. 3 seeded Grayson (9-3) will now advance to the state semifinals where they will face another strong challenger — unbeaten Rye Cove — with a 13-0 record.

ABINGDON — Carroll County concluded its 2024 football season on Nov. 15, facing a tough road match-up against Abingdon in the opening round of the 3D playoffs. It was the first time the Cavaliers had played a postseason game since 2021. Despite a valiant effort, the Cavaliers fell to the Falcons 52-13. The Falcons (10-1) didn’t waste any time putting its potent offense in gear, putting 52 points on the scoreboard in the first half.

GALAX — The Grayson County Blue Devils claimed the Mountain Empire District championship on Nov. 8 with a 47-3 victory over the Galax Maroon Tide in a game played in front of a large crowd of fans in Galax. The Blue Devils finished the season with a 4-0 MED record with second going to George Wythe with a 3-1 record. Grayson jumped on the Maroon Tide in the first period, taking a 28-0 lead. Senior running back Aaron Peterson was unstoppable for the Blue Devils, scoring four touchdowns.
