BRISTOL — Grayson County had an impressive showing at the Virginia High School League Class 1 State Wrestling Tournament, held March 1 at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den. Grundy finished first with a team score of 278.5 points. Rural Retreat finished second with 192; Grayson County third, with 171.5; Bath County fourth, with 88.5; and Holston rounded out the top five with 85.5 points.

PENN LAIRD — Spotswood outscored Carroll County 44-29 in the second period to silence the Cavaliers 71-52 in the Class 3 state quarterfinal game played March 4. The Cavaliers, who finished off an outstanding 23-3 season in the Three Rivers District, played in its first state playoff tournament game since 2013. Spotswood (24-3) is a member of the Valley District.

ROANOKE — The Galax Maroon Tide girls ended their basketball season on Feb. 28 with a 56-38 setback to George Wythe in the Region 1C semifinals, played at Northside High School. Galax didn’t give up in the match against the highly-favored Maroons. They closed out their season with a (19-4) record. George Wythe (23-3) rolled over Fort Chiswell (20-6) 47-39 on March 1 to win the Region 1C title and advance to the state playoffs this weekend.

HENRICO — Two members if the Grayson County Blue Devil wrestling team qualified for the Virgnia High School League girls state championships, held last week at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Glen Allen. Just a year after winning the first girls wrestling state championship for Grayson County High School, Isabella Hill made it back-to-back titles. She claimed the title in the 138-pound weight class over Dinwiddie County’s Sydney Ogburn in the championship match.

PEARISBURG — The Grayson County Blue Devils won the Region 1B/C Wrestling Championship held at Giles County High School on Feb. 14. Four wrestlers won their individual championships to lead the Blue Devils with 231.5 points, while the Galax Maroon Tide was second with 186.6 points. Parry McCluer was third with 146.5 points.
