NJ Transit officials said late last month that refunds for unused tickets were on the way and should be received by the first week in April. But by the end of last week, some commuters told NJ Advance Media they were still waiting. The ticket refunds were offered after the agency changed the ticket expiration policy to 30 days starting on July 1 last year as part of NJ Transit’s efforts to cut costs. Tickets had no expiration date under the old policy.

NJ Transit’s board on Wednesday approved the purchase of 228 buses, 20 of them electric, for $393.4 million, beginning a massive plan to replace more than 1,200 aging buses in five years. “We need 1,235 buses to fully modernize the fleet, by end of this year the plan is to make sure we have all the buses authorized by the board,” NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said.

New Jersey roads were deadlier than those in most of the country last year, with traffic fatalities increasing by 14% compared to the national average which declined. The nation saw a 3.8% decrease in traffic fatalities, when 2024 was compared to 2023, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report released Tuesday said. New Jersey was among 14 states that bucked the national trend, according to NHTSA and the New Jersey State Police.
