Fifty years ago, on April 4, 1976, Bill Gates and the late Paul Allen founded Microsoft. A half century later, it’s one of the world’s most valuable companies. And even though it’s based in Redmond, Washinton, it has a strong Silicon Valley presence. Its first product, released that July, was a version of the BASIC programming language for the Altair computer. The Altair was generally recognized as the first personal computer. It didn’t even have a keyboard or display.

In last week’s column I mentioned that – for the time being at least – I’ve switched from Android to iPhone and, because iPhone doesn’t support my Pixel Watch, I’m now wearing an Apple Watch Series 10. There is a lot I love about the Apple Watch including its elegant design and watch faces, its seamless integration with iPhone and other Apple devices and its services, including the ability to find items with an Apple AirTag for finding lost items.

About two weeks ago, I decided to fix this by purchasing several Apple products. I started with an Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. It doesn’t work with my Google Pixel 3 watch, so I bought an Apple Watch Series 10. And, although my Pixel Earbuds do work with the iPhone, I nevertheless bought an Apple AirPod 2 Pro, partially to try out the hearing-aid function, which will be the subject of a future column.

In addition to banning younger children, social media companies typically have protections for teens, and these are sometimes different depending on whether it’s a younger teen (perhaps under 16) or someone who’s within a couple of years of being an adult. Although these policies help protect teens on social media and keep younger children off of the platforms, they only work if the teen or child is honest about their age.

For the most part, I can handle these attempts, but it’s not just me. Everyone I’ve asked tells me they are inundated with attempted scams on nearly a daily basis by phone, text, email and social media. If you think you’re not among this group, check your spam folder. If you have good filters, you may not see the deluge of attempted scams, but I’m pretty sure you’re a target, albeit hopefully not a victim. And they’re not just aimed at adults. Children and teens get them too.
