    Creston golfers opened the 2025 season Thursday with a senior recognition day matchup with Atlantic boys at home, and a narrow five-stroke loss to the Atlantic girls at Atlantic. A strong Atlantic boys team prevailed 159-196, led by medalist Gage Gross with an even-par 36 at Crestmoor Golf Club. Sophomore Garrett Troutwine led the Panthers with a 46. “I was impressed with Garrett Troutwine,” Creston coach Steve Shantz said. “He really works on his game during practice.

    Creston tennis opened the 2025 season Tuesday, with an inexperienced boys team falling 9-0 at home to Red Oak, while the girls prevailed 8-1 at Red Oak. The No. 1 boys doubles team of senior veteran Spencer Brown and varsity newcomer Joel Wires was edged by Red Oak’s Landon Gigstad and Ethan Strunk, 9-8 on an 11-9 tiebreaker. New varsity players Dylan Dornack and Carson Beer played strong at No. 3 doubles in an 8-6 loss to Kaleb Sebeniecher and Jackson Perdue.

    It took less than five minutes of the 2025 season for the Creston/Nodaway Valley girls soccer team to show an improved attack this year. Speedy freshman Karissa Groves of Nodaway Valley drove a shot into the Riverside net just 4:17 into the match, taking the assist from Nodaway Valley’s Lillie Strode for a 1-0 lead. Riverside prevented the Panthers from securing their first season-opening win since a 2-0 victory over Missouri Valley in 2012 by tying the match 1-1 at 26:50.

    Southwestern Community College officials deemed their first attempt at hosting high school basketball all-star games a big success Sunday evening. Men’s coach Darryl Fletcher and women’s coach Kori Zarzutzki coordinated their efforts to bring some of the top talents of Southwest Iowa together for an exhibition, regardless of their class in school.
