Image is important Image is important. We know that it matters greatly to Dabo Swinney and other coaches, and they go to great and even obsessive lengths to assure that their messaging conveys and creates the desired image. Swinney has sometimes been accused of micromanaging and controlling the message. As if that's a bad thing. It's totally fair for those of us on the outside -- media, fans, etc.

The big picture BECOME A TIGERILLUSTRATED.com SUBSCRIBER! As Clemson prepares for a season of not just high expectations but high stakes, we believe it's worth taking some time to look beyond just the opening 60 minutes of football that will take place on Aug. 30. Yes, the LSU primetime showdown at Clemson's Death Valley is massive. It's going to say a lot about the state of things for both programs that are considered Top 5 programs in 2025. But it won't say everything.

CLEMSON -- Last week a bunch of Clemson football players were having fun in downtown Clemson. The right kind of fun (playing EA Sports College Football 25 on College Avenue). And at the right kind of time (6 PM and not 2 AM). It was a great idea to add this to the city's normal Tuesday-night summer ritual whereby College Avenue is shut down to allow residents to eat, drink and be merry while listening to a live band.

Shock to the system BECOME A TIGERILLUSTRATED.com SUBSCRIBER! There's a reason quite a few national media folks, and probably quite a few Clemson fans too, are reconsidering the last rites they pronounced on Dabo Swinney's methods within the last couple years. Money is of course a major part, as it's always been. And it's not getting less important. Yet the available evidence suggests that some other facets of recruiting aren't getting less important, either.

Built to last BECOME A TIGERILLUSTRATED.com SUBSCRIBER! One of our biggest gripes about hot takes is that the people delivering them often don't hold themselves accountable when they've whiffed on one. They merely move on to the next one elsewhere, taking advantage of short attention spans and betting (correctly in a lot of cases) that no one will even remember what they said 10 months ago or even 10 days ago.

A game Clemson doesn't have to play BECOME A TIGERILLUSTRATED.com SUBSCRIBER! One of Clemson's chief rivals is playing a serious game of catchup in the facilities arms race. To the tune of $400 million. And it feels heavier in this era, a time when revenue sharing for athletes has taken away much of the impetus to raise money for new buildings with things such as slides, nap rooms, barber shops and the litany of attractions that used to be the main thrust of recruiting.
