The quick answer is this: unless there are changes to state law or board bylaws, it’s up to the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners to set the salaries for the subsequent term’s commission. The process and logistics are different, but most local, state, and federal elected officials are the ones giving themselves pay increases. So, what’s happening? County commissioners currently earn $18,431.11 a year, with the vice chair making $19,824.71, and the chair making $21,197.51.
