The death on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, of Pope Francis, the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years, prompted an outpouring of tributes reflecting his stature as a global moral authority from leaders across Africa and the world. AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf sent condolences on behalf of the regional body, calling Pope Francis “a towering moral voice of our time and a steadfast advocate for peace, justice, compassion, and human dignity”.
