Nationwide, more than 60% of the water we use comes from rivers, streams and lakes. For example, New York City gets 90% of its water from the Delaware Basin. Philadelphia gets almost 60%. These waterways are continually under threat from pollution, development and climate change.

An estimated 40 million Americans live in floodplains, facing a risk of catastrophic flooding that puts them and their homes in danger. That includes Steve Rodriguez, whose home near a creek in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, floods so often, he paid to raise it 10 feet. Some of his neighbors went even higher, 20 feet or more. The flooding risk is made worse by more intense rainfall driven by climate change and by unchecked development.

Across the U.S., rivers are in crisis. One of the major issues they face is contamination by sewage and other forms of pollution, but some communities are impacted more than others. In Philadelphia, trash littered part of the Cobbs Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River, not far from where people live. Jerome Shabazz, who runs the non-profit Overbrook Environmental Education Center in Philadelphia, took CBS News along to clean up some of the trash.

But the aging technology, which dates back to 1988, is in desperate need of an upgrade. Tornado activity across the U.S. is increasing, with more than 470 tornadoes reported through early April. The National Weather Service has also issued the most tornado warnings in nearly 40 years.
