Tomasso said it is Greco-Roman, probably 1st century BC-1st century AD and the damage to the cameo “probably happened 2000 years ago”. According to the auction house it is one of the “last two on this scale of any subject to remain in private hands”. Mares and Foals, dated to c.1769, is the “grandest statement” of a series of paintings executed in the 1760s and is believed to have been painted for Augustus Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton (1735-1811), the British Prime Minister from 1768-70.

Auctioneers and dealers are concerned more couriers will follow suit, particularly in light of the Hainault sword attack on May 30 when 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin was murdered and four people seriously injured. However, according to reports, the weapon was a replica sword that is already illegal to buy and own in the UK.

On the 2000 Guineas weekend [a Newmarket horse racing event] I held an open day at Saint Wendred’s, my racing yard. I combined it with art, all of which was for sale for invited guests and the general public. I was asked by some of the participating artists if they could leave their work with me, to represent them in the UK. So the idea of opening a permanent gallery was born. It’s gone from strength to strength.
