The pedestrianisation of Wells Market Place is set to continue after city councillors voted unanimously to make the current arrangements permanent. The historic square, located in front of the Town Hall, was previously used as a car park on non-market days. Temporary traffic orders introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the area into a pedestrian zone, allowing cafés to expand their outdoor seating and offering more space for residents and visitors to enjoy the city centre.

Temporary traffic lights remain in place on the A371 Pike Hill more than two months after a partial wall collapse near Shepton Mallet – and there's still no confirmed date for when full repair work will begin. The wall, located on a key route between Shepton and Wells, partially collapsed earlier this year.
