Much of Richie Talboy’s work has an otherworldly quality to it – blurring the lines between what’s real and fantasy. For the second of three covers of Dazed Maxx, the first-ever US edition of Dazed, the photographer brought his signature surrealist style to capture sports subcultures in New York. The shoot took place against a perfectly cloudy screensaver-style scene, with birds flying in the background and Olympic breakdancer Sunny Choi towering over lush green hills, balancing on one hand.

7 Images I’ve come face-to-face with a doppelgänger at two points in my life. First, when I was a child, on a family trip in Australia. I spent the week with my red-haired double. We’d catch frogs in our hands and count our matching freckles in the hotel pool. Fellow tourists would take our photos, asking if we were twins. Then, in 2019, I met my other (other) self, Juule, while covering Moscow Fashion Week. Again, we bonded instantly. Again, people asked if we were twins or siblings.

In the first of three covers of Dazed Maxx, the first-ever US edition of Dazed, Tobey McIntosh, the mastermind behind Crenshaw Skate Club, stands in the middle of an ice rink. Spinning and skating around him are ice skaters Ganna Bogdan, Tatiana Zaytseva, Nicole Igdal, Maksym Varenyk, Chisom Arinze and Alina Milevska. According to the photographer, Rueguh, this was an intentional contrast: between relaxation and movement, between skateboarding’s “own niche swag” and ice skating’s flamboyancy.

I’ve never been to a Christie's or Sotheby’s auction because I have no real reason – or the finances – to do so. I have, however, now attended an auction where CK Swett, an auctioneer who has worked at Christie’s, sold Ottessa Moshfegh’s toothbrush for $110. Last night, on April 1, Substack hosted ‘How bad do you want it?’ with Moshfegh and Eddie Huang at The Golden Unicorn – possibly the silliest private auction in New York history.
