Every underground station has evolved. There are disused and reused areas that are usually off-limits which is why the London Transport Museum ‘Hidden London’ tours are so fascinating. A third of Holborn station is usually out-of-bounds to you and me but we can now enjoy exploring these areas on a ‘Hidden London’ guided tour. There’s an unexpected view of the Piccadilly line and the two closed platforms of the former Aldwych branch*.

That’s probably the longest unintentional headline I’ve ever written but I think it gets the point across. When out and about in London, it’s always worth looking up, down and all around as you’ll often spot something unusual. It’s the joy of an old city that has evolved with layers left to discover unexpectedly. For this list, I wanted to choose things that meet the title’s criteria well and not ‘hidden gems’ such as St Dunstan in the East, God’s Own Junkyard or even the Bourdon Place Statues.

Nestled on the banks of the River Stour in Essex, Manningtree is often said to be England’s smallest town (though Fordwich in Kent might contest that!) Yes, Manningtree is small but it is worth visiting. I was once on a Finnair flight from Helsinki to London and sat beside a Japanese woman who had travelled from Japan and this was her connection to the UK. She told me she came every year to go to Manningtree.

The Lookout is a free high-level viewing gallery in the City of London. It opened in 2023 and this 2,500 square foot viewing space is on the 50th floor of 8 Bishopsgate, close to Liverpool Street station. And it is right next door to the entrance for Horizon 22 (London’s highest free viewing platform). You may have to queue outside to enter at your pre-booked time slot as the lobby area is quite small.
