On the evening of Friday, 9 December 1988, Sydney Harbour shook with a thunderstorm. Rain poured all night and across the city there were blackouts. Finally, at dawn, the sun emerged, the storm had passed. At around 9am, Bryan Butson, his friend Paul Patterson and Paul’s 13-year-old son Stephen set out to go spear fishing along the rocks below the North Head cliffs in the beach-side suburb of Manly, 20 minutes north of the city.
